Friends of the Maribyrnong Valley Inc. was formed in 1986 as a community-based organisation, dedicated to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Maribyrnong River and its valley parklands in Melbourne’s west.

Since its founding, the group has relied on thousands of volunteers to carry out revegetation, weed control, litter removal and public education, while also advocating for the long-term care of the river corridor.

We have contributed 150,000+ volunteer hours over 40 years

Over the decades, we have worked closely with Local Councils, Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, schools, businesses and other community groups to restore habitat and improve public awareness of the valley’s environmental value. Through this sustained grassroots effort, the Friends of the Maribyrnong Valley has become an enduring local voice for conservation and stewardship in the Maribyrnong River catchment.

In the last 40 years we planted over 500,000 trees and shrubs.

We contribute around 4000 volunteer hours annually.  This is the equivalent of two full time gardeners each year.

This year’s goal is to partner with Brimbank and Maribyrnong Councils and Parks Victoria to plant up to 20,000 native trees and shrubs.

With great support from Landcare, Melbourne Water, and BUPA.

Our goal for the future is to continue the work we are doing with our partners and sponsors.  We will also continue to work with the other local volunteer groups and organiszations who share our goals to help develop a comprehensive restoration and management plan for the area.

What we will accomplish depends significantly on the number of volunteers and sponsors who are prepared to assist.

Will you help?
